According to the Alabama Code of 1907, one of the primary activities and purposes of the Dept. of Archives and History was the collection of materials bearing upon the history of the state and of the territroy of Alabama. The director was charged with carrying out this mission. This series is composed of reports to the director written by employees who traveled around the state soliciting historical documents and excavating artifacts. The amount of information offered in the reports varies widely. The reports with the most details are those written by Peter Brannon in the years 1911-1922. His reports include narrative statements describing the activities in which he engaged and the people and landmarks he encountered, followed by lists of the items he encountered, followed by lists of the items he collected. The reports by other employees are less detailed and are mixed in with their personnel information.
